I was the director of El Centro de Amistad y Apoyo, and taught grades 1st-4th there during the 8 years I served there. El Centro, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, is a center for underprivileged, rural kids. After a decade in Bolivia, I'm now back in Colorado, where I am K/1st grade teacher at a local school.
Katie, it's fabulous that you are allowing (encouraging?) the kids to read wherever they want. You're helping them see that reading is not just for school...that it can happen anywhere and that it can be fun. You've done a marvelous job getting the lending library established and then showing the children how to appreciate the books. (And I'm not just a Proud Aunt!!) :)
Great pictures of the students reading together! Melissa said that she was reminded of almost the same pictures from teaching her students in PNG - keep up the good work!
